Transfer a connection to maintenance

Place a connection in maintenance, i.e., close it temporarily, when the connection needs to be disconnected from the network for reasons such as demolition.

Place a connection in maintenance, i.e., close it temporarily, when the connection needs to be disconnected from the network due to the demolition of a building or if you do not need electricity now but you may need it again in the future.

We will remove the electricity meter and disconnect the connection from the electricity network, but the connection contract will remain in force, and you can reactivate the connection whenever you need to.

Demolishing a building with a live electricity connection could be life-threatening and could cause a network failure

If you intend to demolish a building on the property, for reasons of electrical safety, demolition work must not begin until our contractor has deactivated the connection, i.e. disconnected it from the electricity distribution network.

Note: the property may still be energised even if there is no electricity contract in force or if the electricity is disconnected by pressing the power button on the electricity meter.

If the demolition work is urgent, consult our customer service team about the possibility of expedited service in 1–9 business days. We will charge for the expedited service in accordance with our service rates.

Placing an electricity connection in maintenance step by step

1

Is the electricity connection in your name?

Only the owner of the connection may order maintenance of the connection. You can also be authorised to act on behalf of the connection owner – append the power of attorney to the connection maintenance order.

If the information on the connection owner is not up to date, you can report a change of owner on Caruna+.

2

Order the placement of an electricity connection into maintenance

3

The order should state the estimated activation date if you already know it

If you are placing your connection into maintenance temporarily while you demolish a building and you intend to begin construction on the site in the near future, please state on the order your estimate of when you will need electricity. When you place the order, we will check whether any network construction is necessary in order to deploy the connection.

4

We will process your order

Within two weeks, we will place an order with our contractor to put your connection into the maintenance state. We will send you a text message to keep you up to date on the progress of the order. You do not need to sign a separate agreement on maintenance.

5

We will deactivate the connection and remove the meter

Our contractor will remove the electricity meter and disconnect the electricity supply approximately one week after the order is processed. The contractor will confirm the timing of the work with you.

6

The connection is in maintenance

We will send a contract confirmation of maintenance by mail.

Reactivating a connection in maintenance

1

Is the electricity connection in your name?

Only the owner of the connection may order the reactivation of a connection in maintenance. Report a change of owner on Caruna+. You can also act as the connection owner if you have power of attorney. In such a case, make sure you are able to prove your power of attorney.

2

Conclude an electricity contract with an electricity supplier

You must have a valid electricity contract in order to activate the connection. Please contact your electricity supplier in good time. One way to compare electricity suppliers is to use the Energy Authority's online service at sahkonhinta.fi.

Invoicing of the contract will start when the connection has been activated for you.

3

The connection has been in maintenance for longer than one year, or changes have been made to the electrical equipment (connection line and/or main distribution board) during maintenance

Your electricity contractor should order the activation of the connection from Caruna. Your contractor should submit a form to confirm that the replaced or inspected equipment can be safely reconnected to the network.

4

The connection has been in maintenance for less than one year, and no changes have been made to the electrical equipment

If the connection has been in maintenance for less than one year and no changes have been made to the electrical equipment, you can notify us of the reactivation in chat.

5

We will order our contractor to activate the maintenance connection

Q&A

We are demolishing an old house and building a new one in its place. What should I do? Do we need to put the connection in maintenance before we demolish the building?

If you intend to demolish a building on the property, remember that for reasons of electrical safety, demolition work must not begin until our contractor has deactivated the connection, i.e. disconnected it from the electricity distribution network. Note: the property may still be energised even if there is no electricity contract in force or if the electricity is disconnected by pressing the power button on the electricity meter.

Order the placement of the connection into maintenance in good time before you demolish the building.  An electricity connection cannot be put into maintenance if the accounting points under the connection have valid electricity contracts owned by parties other than the owner of the connection.

Your electricity contractor can also place an order with Caruna to have the meter transferred from the condemned building to a new metering centre; in this case, maintenance may not be necessary. Discuss the options with your electricity contractor.

I only need electricity at my cottage in the summer. Could I save money by putting my connection into maintenance for the winter?

When your connection goes into maintenance, we remove the electricity meter and disconnect the electricity for free. We invoice a monthly maintenance fee in accordance with our network service rates, beginning on the date when the meter is removed.

The electricity contract with your electricity supplier will end automatically on the date when the meter is removed. If the connection is kept in maintenance over the winter – i.e., for less than a year – we charge EUR 150 to reactivate the connection. If your connection has been inactive for more than a year, there is no fee for reconnection.

Instead of putting your connection into maintenance for less than a year, you can save money by cutting off the electricity by pressing the 0 button on the electricity meter when you leave your cottage. This will ensure that no electricity is consumed, so we will not charge anything for consumption, but you will need to pay the basic fee as normal every month.

How much does it cost to put a connection into maintenance and to reconnect the electricity?

How can I work out whether it is better to put the connection into maintenance or terminate it entirely?

It is worth putting your electricity connection into maintenance (in other words, to close it temporarily) when you do not need electricity now, but you may need it again in the future. In general, electricity connections are put into maintenance when no electricity is consumed for several years. Examples of this situation include old houses whose future use is still undecided.

If you are sure that you will not need electricity now or in the future, the owner of the connection can terminate the connection contract. Note that if an electricity connection is needed on the plot in the future, a new contract must be made for the connection, and a connection fee will be charged in accordance with our connection fee price list.

The connection agreement remains in force throughout the maintenance period, and the connection is easy to reactivate when electricity is needed again.
