Caruna to launch major network improvement project in southern Finland
Caruna is set to renew its distribution network in central and western Uusimaa. The three-year project seeks to improve security of supply for 29,000 customers. The value of the improvement works will amount to tens of millions of euros.
Caruna has agreed on framework agreements totaling 75 million euros with Eltel Networks, Relacom Finland and Vertek on network improvements that will strengthen the security of supply. The three-year project will include several separate network improvement projects in central and western Uusimaa. Reliability of electricity supply will be largely enhanced by extending the cable network underground, where it remains protected from weather.
“In the long term, underground cabling of electricity networks is the most sustainable solution. The benefits of our cabling efforts will become evident soon, especially in urban areas. For example, the effects of the storm we experienced last August were decreased by roughly 30% compared to those seen in previous years”, said Caruna’s CEO Jyrki Tammivuori.
Caruna’s first renovation projects in the southern Finland network area were launched in November 2014. The works have progressed on schedule, and the new project will extend the underground cable network further outside urban areas. The planning phase will be launched at the beginning of 2017, followed by the construction phase during the spring of 2017.
“When choosing partners, quality is our first consideration. We have acted on our customer feedback and will strengthen our focus on customer satisfaction in all our future activities. Another major concern for us is to ensure that our partners can assist us in troubleshooting faults, for example by making electricians available during major faults, which will enable us to carry out repairs without delay,” said Head of Property Management Timo Jutila.
Decade-long network improvement project
The project taking place in southern Finland is part of Caruna’s extensive investment in the electricity network across the company’s network areas. The new agreement will annually provide employment for approximately 250 people. All in all, Caruna’s projects directly employ approximately 2,000 people each year, across Finland.
The objective of the network improvement project is to renovate Caruna’s entire network extending 80,000 kilometres by 2028, meeting the expectations of Caruna’s customers and society, and fulfilling the more stringent security of supply criteria laid down in the Electricity Market Act. In addition to underground cabling, Caruna is improving reliability of the electricity network by implementing other technical solutions and managing adjacent forest areas along power lines.
